It's a bit normal... I don't exactly blame the newcomers who drop this anime early on. The Hunter exam is cool but nothing mind-blowing. Then comes the Zoldyck family arc, which is arguably the worst arc out of all the arcs in this anime (for the record, I'm not saying the arc is bad, I actually quite like the arc, it's just that out of ALL the arcs, it's objectively the worst) and then comes the Heaven's Arena arc, where you start to learn about Nen and that's when the newcomers usually stick around.

Now that you are in the Yorknew City arc, it's all better because these really powerful characters are all Nen users and to get to Nen, you had to go through three arcs. Plus, their abilities are something worth sticking around for. My point is---the more you stick around for Hunter X Hunter 2011, the better it gets.

This is an amazing anime no doubt, if it was still on going and the author didn't had to take so much break (for obvious reasons cause of his health issues) and if the manga didn't went on a long hiatus it would have been even more popular than it already is.

i prefer hxh over one piece tbh but yeah thats just my opinion

I love how they removed the eyecatchers. It makes the series more serious and it really fits to this arc.

First thing that came to mind was fan service but I don't think you're talking about that

Eyecatchers are these 5-10 seconds animations that you see playing randomly in the middle of the early episodes, the "Hunter dictionary" ones where Gon or another character looks at a word in Hunter language before its meaning is shown.

Eyecatchers are a very common anime trope, their relevance is to signify a commerical break, sometimes even one playing before the break and one playing after. they are sometimes just showing the logo of the show or something, but some anime are more creative with it, like HxH's "Hunter dictionary" described above, One Piece showing bounty posters of the Straw Hat Pirates, Death Note showing a new rule of the death note every time, Attack on Titans explaining a certain concept or event, My Hero Academia explain a random character's quirks and their hero name, etc...
